PIAA Softball/Baseball First Round

June 5, 2023 1:56 am

Burgettstown baseball took an early lead, built it to 6-1, and Andrew Bredel retired 10 straight batters to end the game as the Blue Devils reach the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Burgettstown will face District 10 champion Sharpsville in Thursday’s quarterfinals. California wasn’t so fortunate, falling behind 7-1 in the second. The Trojans never recovered and have been eliminated.

On the softball side, Trinity scored five times over the first two innings and rolled to the next round. Maddy Argo, Ryleigh Hoy and Kristina Bozek drove in runs in the first, Hanna Suhoski smashed a two-run home run in the second and the Hillers were off and running. Trinity’s win means a rematch with Shaler in the quarterfinals, the team the Hillers beat in the WPIAL semifinals two weeks back. Chartiers-Houston used an 8-run seventh inning to blow the lid off in the Bucs’ win against Cambridge Springs. Chartiers-Houston will face District 6 champion Claysburg-Kimmel in the quarterfinals. Carmichaels scored early and often, ousting District 9 champion DuBois Central Catholic. Waynesburg took an early lead but couldn’t hold on as the Raiders were eliminated.
