PIAA Wrestling Championships Underway

The best Pennsylvania wrestlers have gathered at Hershey’s Giant Center for the PIAA Individual Championships this weekend.  Washington & Greene Counties have 12 wrestlers starting in the AA field with 13 in the AAA brackets. AA Preliminaries are in the books. Bentworth (Chris Vargo, Vitali Daniels) & Burgettstown (Parker Sentipal, Joey Sentipal) have two wrestlers each into the quarterfinals along with Beth-Center’s Tyler Berish.  Gaven Suica (Burgettstown), Kyle McCollum (Beth-Center) and Cameron Carter-Green (Wash High) are still alive in the consolations after Thursday’s action.  Rudy Brown & Joey Baronick (Burgettstown), Bradeon Welsh (Ft. Cherry) and Chase Frameli (Jeff-Morgan) were eliminated.

AAA Preliminaries saw six of the 13 Washington/Greene qualifiers advance to the quarterfinals led by Waynesburg’s Mac Church, Colton Stoneking and Rocco Welsh. Joining the Raiders’ trio, Canon-McMillan’s Jacob Houpt & Matthew Furman and Darius McMillon, Peters Township. Two of the local contingent, Trinity’s Blake Reihner and Waynesburg Zander Phatorus, won pigtail bouts before losing in the first round and have advanced to 2nd Consolations Friday afternoon. Waynesburg’s Noah Tustin won his first round consolation bout while teammate Brody Evans lost twice and was eliminated. Canon-McMillan lost three wrestlers after a pair of losses: Tanner Mizenko, Brandon Dame and Gabriel Stafford.
