
PITTSBURGH (AP) — James Wood led off the game with a home run and Jake Irvin pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Washington Nationals to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Irvin (1-0) allowed three hits, struck out six and walked one while snapping the Nationals’ three-game losing streak. The Pirates never got a runner past second base in losing for the fourth time in five games. Jose A. Ferrer and Kyle Finnegan pitched one inning each to finish the four-hitter. Finnegan notched his sixth save in as many opportunities. The shutout came a night after the Pirates scored a season-high in runs while beating the Nationals 10-3.
