Blake Sweder scored 21 points, Derek Errett 20 more as Fort Cherry knocked off Serra Catholic to move to Saturday’s state quarterfinals. The Rangers used an 18-point run over a five-minute stretch of the first half to take a lead they would never surrender. Fort Cherry took a 14-point lead into halftime, withstood an early challenge by the Eagles, then rattled off a 17-3 burst to cement the win. The Rangers will face WPIAL sixth-place finisher Jeannette Saturday afternoon. Site & time to be determined. The South Fayette girls were not as fortunate, struggling to score against Oakland Catholic’s pressure defense. The Lions fell behind 15-4 after one quarter and never seriously challenged the rest of the way. South Fayette scored consecutive baskets only twice in the game, early in the second and midway through the third.
Tuesday, Peters Township built a 7-point lead near the mid-point of the second quarter, then didn’t score again for more than seven minutes, allowing Spring-Ford to go on a 19-0 run. The Indians never recovered and fell in the second round of the state playoffs. Gemma Walker led Peters Township with 24 points in her final high school game. Click PIAA Brackets
