Bay County, MI and South Hills, PA both lost elimination game and have been eliminated form the PONY World Series. Action resumes Monday with two more elimination games during the day (10:00 am & 12:30 pm). Two winners’ bracket games are set for Monday night including Washington County taking on Guaynabo, PR at 4:30 pm. Hagerstown, MD and Chinese Taipei will wrap up the day’s action at 7:00 pm. West Covina, CA 12, South Hills, PA 4 (South Hills eliminated)
Chinese Taipei scored three times after two out in the first and never looked back, rolling past Navojoa, Mexico in the final opening-round game. The Asia-Pacific champions scored three runs in the fifth, then set 11 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring six times. Lei Yeh drove in three runs, Zi-Han Yang and Yu-Yen Lo each had two RBI. Chang-Ruei Chen threw 3.2 scoreless innings to get the win. Navojoa had multiple chances to score, including having two on, one out in the second and fifth innings, both frames ending with double plays. The Mexico squad loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, finally scoring its only run. Chinese Taipei advances to play Hagerstown, MD in the winners’ bracket while Navojoa will take on Paderborn, Germany in an elimination game.
Paderborn, Germany’s win over Bay County was the first for any European Zone entry since 2016. John Duesing pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just one run and six hits while striking out 11. Felix Blesing had three hits, two for extra bases and drove in two runs to lead the offense. Matthes Schwarke also drove in two runs. Bay County managed just one run and five hits before the final inning when Keegan Tingley’s two-run double set the final score.
West Covina scored six runs in the third against South Hills, five after the inning should have ended. The West Zone champs then put the game away with six more runs in the fifth. Aaron Morales homered twice for West Covina. After West Covina’s first outburst, South Hills cut the deficit in half, taking advantage of a pair of doubles and two West Covina errors. Tate Foster and Owen Ferko drove in runs for South Hills. West Covina faces Hidalgo, TX in an elimination game.
