Tight end Zach Cernuto caught a career-best 14 passes, including one for the go-ahead touchdown, as Washington & Jefferson College beat Case-Western Reserve, 34-21, Saturday afternoon. Quarterback Jake Pugh completed 34-of-44 passes for 340 yards, adding touchdown connections to Anthony Rosati late in the first half and Raymond Holmes midway through third quarter. Kobe DeRosa opened, and closed, the scoring for W&J with a pair of one-yard runs, key parts to his 20 carry, 89 yard afternoon to help W&J stay atop the Presidents’ Athletic Conference standings with one game left on the schedule. The Presidents’ defense snared three interceptions and six sacks, enough to hold the Spartans to just 14 points for a second straight week. Brandon Brown had two interceptions giving him three for the season. Angelo Volomino notched his second of the campaign. Dawson Dietz recorded three sacks, giving him 29.5 for his career, one behind Mike Brooder (’94) for fifth place all-time. W&J has an off-week before traveling to Meadville to take on Allegheny (1-7) to close the regular season. The Presidents are tied with Carnegie-Mellon and defending conference champion Grove City. Should the three teams win out, W&J would receive the League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
