One of the toughest regional wrestling tournaments in the country happens this weekend at Canon-McMillan High School–the WPIAL AAA Southwest Regional. The tournament features the top five place-winners from the section tournaments a week ago. On the line–four spots in each weight at the PIAA Championships next weekend in Hershey. We’ll have complete live coverage on WJPA-AM (1450) and online Listen Here. Follow all of the individual wrestling tournament action on the WJPA Wrestling Page — Click Here
Two weeks ago, Thayne Lawrence, Frazier, became the 29th wrestler all-time to win four WPIAL titles. This weekend, two more wrestlers have a shot at joining the group: Sam Hillegas of North Hills and Norwin’s Kurtis Phipps. Also, Canon-McMillan’s Gerrit Nijenhuis looks to continue his assault on the WPIAL all-time wins mark, set by Dane Johnson (Shady Side Academy ’11) and matched two years later by SSA’s Geoff Alexander. Nijenhuis enters the WPIAL Championships with 173 victories.
