Wednesday was the final night of the WPIAL dual meet section season with several available team tournament spots to be determined. The top two teams in each section automatically qualify. Two additional wild card teams will be selected by the WPIAL Wrestling Committee. Brackets are due to be announced late Thursday morning.
In 2A, McGuffey & Burgettstown wins clinch section championships. Avella and Beth-Center both won on the road to clinch tournament bids. The Bulldogs victory at Bentworth wasn’t decided until Malaki Peak scored a pin at 285 pounds to tie the score and win the match because it was B-C’s 7th bout victory of the night. Avella, Beth-Center, Burgettstown, Chartiers-Houston, Jeff-Morgan and McGuffey have all qualified for the WPIAL 2A tournament. Bentworth awaits word on its wild card resume.
In 3A, Canon-McMillan took the lead midway through the match and stormed to the win at Trinity, winning the Section 2 championship. Both teams had already clinched tournament spots. Now, the Big Macs hope to host a quarterfinal grouping next Wednesday night. Peters Township edged Mt. Lebanon, taking a tournament bid and knocking out the Blue Devils. Ringgold lost at home to Belle Vernon, the Leopards taking the automatic bid to the tourney. Canon-McMillan, Peters Township and Trinity have clinched 3A spots. Ringgold is hoping for a wild card invitation.
