MLB Reinstates Pete Rose & Shoeless Joe Jackson

May 13, 2025 4:41 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson were reinstated by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday, making both eligible for the sport’s Hall of Fame after their careers were tarnished by sports gambling scandals. Rose’s permanent ban was lifted eight months after his death and comes a day before the Cincinnati Reds will honor baseball’s career hits leader with Pete Rose Night. Manfred announced Tuesday that he was changing the league’s policy on permanent ineligibility, saying bans would expire after death. Under the Hall of Fame’s current rules, it appears the earliest Rose or Jackson could be inducted would be in 2028.

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and the New York Mets took advantage of a costly error by shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Pirates ace Paul Skenes pitched out of trouble all night and exited after six innings with a chance to win. New York left fielder Brandon Nimmo robbed Joey Bart of a leadoff homer in the eighth, but Pittsburgh tied it at 3 in the ninth.

Tommy Pham Serves 1-Game Suspension

May 13, 2025 4:41 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham has served a one-game suspension against the New York Mets for conduct directed at Los Angeles Angels fans last month. Pham was disciplined by Major League Baseball and fined an undisclosed amount on April 25 for “inappropriate actions toward” Angels fans during a game two days earlier. The penalty was upheld after his appeal went to a hearing. The 37-year-old Pham reportedly made an obscene gesture to a fan who touched him while he was tracking down a ball in the left-field corner during a 3-0 win over the Angels.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Joey Bart’s fielder’s choice on a hard ground ball in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Atlanta Braves 4-3 to win two in a three-game series. Bart hit a sharp grounder with the infield drawn in that hit off shortstop Nick Allen’s glove and scored Adam Frazier. It was Bart’s second career walk-off RBI. The Pirates fired manager Derek Shelton before the series and replaced him with bench coach Don Kelly. Pittsburgh had lost seven games in a row and 10 of 11 before the change.

Rockies Fire Manager Bud Black

May 12, 2025 4:43 am

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have fired manager Bud Black. He was the winningest manager in franchise history, but the Rockies are off to a 7-33 start that’s one of the worst in Major League Baseball history. Colorado promoted third base coach Warren Schaeffer to be the interim manager Sunday after a 9-3 win over San Diego. That victory wasn’t enough to save Black’s job after the Rockies lost 21-0 to the Padres on Saturday. They also fired bench coach Mike Redmond. Hitting coach Clint Hurdle takes over as interim bench coach. The Rockies have the worst 40-game start since the 1988 Baltimore Orioles.

Pirates Make Don Kelly A Winner In His Debut As Manager

May 10, 2025 4:25 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bailey Falter allowed just two hits over six innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates made manager Don Kelly a winner in his debut, beating the Atlanta Braves 3-2. Kelly, a Pittsburgh-area native promoted from bench coach to manager after the club fired Derek Shelton, received a warm ovation when introduced before the game. Kelly then sat back and watched the Pirates put together a crisp nine innings of work that had been elusive during their miserable start. Alexander Canario and Jared Triolo homered for Pittsburgh. The Braves fell to 0-4 this season when trying to reach .500.
