PITTSBURGH (AP) — CJ Abrams homered twice, Patrick Corbin pitched into the seventh inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2. Abrams hit a two-run shot to right-center off Andre Jackson in the third inning. He also lined a fastball over the 21-foot-high Clemente Wall in right field in the seventh for his first career multihomer game. Corbin allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 10-13. Bryan Reynolds and Ji Hwan Bae had RBI hits for the Pirates.

Ke’Bryan Hayes Calls For Robot Umpires

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes is among the players ready for robot umpires in the major leagues. Hayes complained on social media after Sunday’s loss to Atlanta about a 3-1 pitch that appeared to be well outside that plate umpire Bill Miller called a strike. Hayes struck out on the next pitch to end the eighth inning. He wrote in the post that the pitch was “not even close” and “some umps really don’t care.” Hayes asked Major League Baseball to “bring the ABS please,” using the acronym for the Automated Ball-Strike system that’s being used for some minor league games.

Aaron Rodgers Injured; Jets Beat Bills In Overtime

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of the game with an Achilles tendon injury just four plays into his debut for the New York Jets, who rallied behind their defense and stunned the Buffalo Bills 22-16 in overtime on when rookie Xavier Gipson returned a punt 65 yards for the winning score. New York’s aggressive defense forced four turnovers from Buffalo’s Josh Allen, including three interceptions by Jordan Whitehead, in a wild and often ugly season opener. While the Jets concluded their night with coach Robert Saleh joining a celebratory mob in the end zone, the injury to Rodgers cast a pall over their season.

DraftKings Apologizes For Offer Referencing 9/11 Attacks

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) – Sports betting company DraftKings has apologized after using the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to entice people to bet on baseball and football games. The Boston-based company offered users a 9/11-themed promotion titled “Never Forget.” It required the Yankees, Mets and Jets to win their games Monday. That is the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the downing of a passenger jet in a field in Pennsylvania. The tragedy killed nearly 3,000 people. An outcry on social media from people offended by the promotion followed. DraftKings later took it down and apologized.

San Francisco Crushes Steelers In Opener

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves off to a sluggish start following a 30-7 loss to San Francisco. Pittsburgh’s offense sputtered at the start of the game as the 49ers built an early 20-point lead and cruised. Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett completed 31 of 46 passes for 232 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Pickett says he felt comfortable but that the offense simply didn’t execute. Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt had three sacks to tie James Harrison’s franchise mark for 80 1/2 in his career. Pittsburgh hosts Cleveland on “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 18.

AP Top 25: Texas Jumps To 4th After Beating Alabama

Texas jumped to No. 4 in The Associated Press college football poll after beating Alabama and the Pac-12 became just the second conference to place as many as eight teams in an AP Top 25. Georgia received 55 first-place votes to remain the clear No. 1. Michigan is No. 2, with two-first place votes. No. 3 Florida State received three first-place votes and moved up a spot. Texas got two-first place votes. The Longhorns are in the top five for the first time since starting the 2010 season at No. 5 while Alabama dropped to No. 10.

Braves Beat Pirates To Clinch Playoff Spot

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves became the first team to clinch a playoff berth, rallying to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 as Matt Olson went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Atlanta (93-49) reached the postseason for the sixth straight year, the second-longest streak in franchise history. The Braves won 11 straight NL East titles from 1995-2005. Entering Sunday, the Braves held a 14-game lead over second-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

Novak Djokovic Wins The US Open For 24th Grand Slam Title

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic has won the U.S. Open for his 24th Grand Slam title by using every ounce of his energy and some serve-and-volley guile to get past Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the final at Flushing Meadows. Djokovic is a 36-year-old from Serbia whose triumph Sunday makes him the oldest man to win the U.S. Open in the professional era. He also moved one major singles title in front of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 entirely as a pro. Only Margaret Court also collected a total of 24, but 13 of those came before professionals were admitted to the Slam events. Medvedev had beaten Djokovic in the 2021 U.S. Open final, and Djokovic was unable to travel to New York last year because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19.

Jacob Pugh hit 15-of-19 passes for 296 yards and a career-high five touchdowns as Washington & Jefferson easily downed Bethany, 42-7.  Pugh connected with John Peduzzi for a pair of first half touchdowns (62 & 24 yards), Anthony Rosati for one in each half (32 & 25 yards) and Kobe De Rose once (12 yards) before intermission.  The Presidents (2-0) were forced to punt on their opening possession of the game, then scored on five straight to build a 35-7 lead at the break. Bethany (0-1) drove 80 yards on eight plays, Kayrus Sam passing 12 yards to Tre Dean for the Bisons’ only score. Sam was 17-for-24 for 196 yards and no interceptions. W&J crafted a 70-yard scoring drive to open the second half, the only points  in the final 30 minutes. Wash/Jeff rolled up 519 yards and 23 first downs. Bethany managed 318 yards (242 passing) and 13 first downs. Each team had one fumble lost.

Cincinnati Holds Off Pitt In Renewal Of River City Rivalry

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Corey Kiner ran for 153 yards and a touchdown and Cincinnati fended off a late rally to edge Pittsburgh 27-21. Emory Jones passed for a pair of scores for the Bearcats (2-0), who flirted with letting a 20-point second-half lead get away before turning away the Panthers (1-1) in the renewal of the River City Rivalry. Phil Jurkovec threw for three touchdowns for Pitt, including a pair in the fourth quarter to get the Panthers within six. He was sacked on fourth-down with just over 4 minutes remaining as the Bearcats held on.
