BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington says the team “will never shut the door” on potentially finding a role for Andrew McCutchen, a longtime cornerstone of the franchise. The Pirates on Monday reached an agreement with veteran slugger Marcell Ozuna on a one-year contract worth $12 million. The deal is subject to a successful physical. Ozuna’s deal would make it more unlikely McCutchen has a role with the Pirates. Ozuna would assume the designated hitter role, which was McCutchen’s primary spot in 2025. McCutchen is a five-time All-Star and the 2013 NL MVP. He is unsigned for 2026.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Julia Taubitz has added to Germany’s Olympic luge dominance by winning gold in the women’s singles race at the Milan Cortina Olympics. She finished nearly a second ahead of Latvia’s Elina Bota, who took silver. Ashley Farquharson earned bronze, giving USA Luge its seventh Olympic medal. This marks the third singles medal for USA Luge at the Olympics. Taubitz’s victory is the 17th gold in women’s singles luge and the 13th for Germany. She’s a two-time world champion and five-time World Cup champion. This Olympic gold was the only title missing from her impressive resume.

Veteran slugger Marcell Ozuna is heading to Pittsburgh. A person familiar with the agreement tells The Associated Press that the 35-year-old free agent has reached a $12 million, one-year deal with the club. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement is not official until Ozuna passes a physical. The signing gives the Pirates another experienced bat for a lineup that struggled in 2025. Ozuna, a 13-year veteran, hit .232 with 21 home runs for Atlanta. Pittsburgh has been busy this offseason, also acquiring All-Stars Brandon Lowe and Ryan O’Hearn.

HOUSTON (AP) — Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has had the final two of nearly 30 civil lawsuits against him dismissed. Court records show these lawsuits involved accusations of sexual misconduct from 27 women, mostly during massage appointments. The dismissals come just before the lawsuits were set to go to trial. Watson, who played for the Houston Texans at the time of the accusations, has denied any wrongdoing. Two Texas grand juries declined to indict him. Most lawsuits were settled in 2022. Watson was suspended for 11 games in 2022 and fined $5 million for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Lindsey Vonn’s father says she will no longer race if he has any say. The American skiing superstar broke her left leg in the Olympics downhill over the weekend. Alan Kildow, Vonn’s father, spoke to The Associated Press on Monday. He said his 41-year-old daughter won’t return to the Olympics. Vonn is recovering in a Treviso hospital after her fall and helicopter evacuation on Sunday. Vonn said on Instagram that she sustained a “complex tibia fracture that is currently stable but will require multiple surgeries to fix properly.” Her family remains by her side.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have won the franchise’s second Super Bowl, and defense was the driving force behind this championship. Devon Witherspoon, Derick Hall, Byron Murphy and the rest of Mike Macdonald’s ferocious unit pummeled Drake Maye in Seattle’s 29-13 win on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Sam Darnold tossed a touchdown pass to AJ Barner, Kenneth Walker III ran for 135 yards and Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record by making all five of his field-goal tries. Seattle’s “Dark Side” defense helped Darnold become the first quarterback in the 2018 draft class to win a Super Bowl.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Kenneth Walker III is running into free agency with a Super Bowl MVP. Walker capped a prolific postseason with another big performance on the ground to help the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 for a championship. While the defense carried Seattle for much of the postseason, Walker was once again the engine of the offense by rushing for 135 yards and adding 26 receiving for his third straight 100-yard game from scrimmage in the postseason. He became the first running back since Terrell Davis 28 years ago to win Super Bowl MVP.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Chris Gotterup shot 7-under 64 and won the Phoenix Open with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff Sunday after Hideki Matsuyama pulled his tee shot into the water. The leader by one heading into the final round, Matsuyama had converted all of his previous five 54-hole leads into wins, but limped to the finish at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course. The two-time Phoenix Open champion nearly hit his tee shot in the on 17 and pulled his drive on 18 left into the church pew bunkers. Matsuyama hit his second shot into the face of the bunker and couldn’t get up-and-down for par. He shot 68 to match Gotterup at 16-under 268. Gotterup also won the season-opening Sony Open.
