Penguins Recall Goalie Louis Domingue After Jarry Injury

PITTSBURGH — With just a couple of weeks left in the regular season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled goalie Louis Domingue from Wilkes Barre after an apparent injury to starter Tristan Jarry, who will not travel with the team to Boston Saturday. According to reports, Jarry suffered a lower-body injury in the playoff-clinching win over the Islanders Thursday. Domingue is set to back up Casey DeSmith when the Penguins take on the Bruins Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.

Former Islander Great Mike Bossy Passes Away

UNDATED (AP) – Mike Bossy continues continues to own the greatest goal-per-game average in NHL history, netting 573 in just 752 contests. That doesn’t include the 61 goals he provided in 72 playoff games while the New York Islanders were winning four straight Stanley Cups from 1980-83. Bossy died Thursday night at age 65, about six months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Bossy won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 1978 after falling to 15th in the draft. He had five 60-goal seasons and was the first player ever to score at least 50 in his first nine seasons. Bossy developed into an outstanding two-way player who was an eight-time All-Star. He is the second member of the Islanders’ “Trio Grande Line” to die this year, three months after fellow Hockey Hall of famer Clark Gillies passed away.

Cantlay Holds Lead At RBC Heritage

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) – FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay birdied his final four holes for a 4-under 67 that puts him two shots ahead of Robert Streb halfway through the RBC Heritage. Cantlay was flawless following bogeys on the 11th and 14th holes, allowing him to surge ahead. Streb also fired a 67. Tour rookie Cameron Young went from his eye-popping debut of 63 on Thursday to a 73 in his second time around Harbour Town. He’s tied for with Joel Dahmen, Cameron Tringale, Erik van Rooyen and Aaron Wise at minus-6. Morgan Hoffmann has missed the cut at the RBC Heritage in his first PGA Tour event since 2019. Hoffmann was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and had to step away from tournament golf for the past two and a-half years.

Penguins Beat Islanders; Clinch Playoff Spot

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Jake Guentzel scored twice, Sidney Crosby also had a goal and the Pittsburgh Penguins earned a playoff berth for the 16th straight season with a 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders. The Penguins extended the longest active postseason streak among teams in major North American professional sports. Danton Heinen, Kris Letang and Brock McGinn also scored for Pittsburgh which tied Calgary for the seventh-longest playoff streak in the NHL since 1967. Tristan Jarry made 36 saves for the Penguins. Zach Parise, Anders Lee and Zdeno Chara scored for the Islanders. Ilya Sorokin stopped 22 shots.

Pirates Overcome Early Deficit To Beat Nationals

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run home run after settling his arbitration case with $13.5 million, two-year contract, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates overcome a three-run deficit to beat the Washington Nationals 9-4. Daniel Vogelbach led off a game with a home run for the first time in the big leagues and matched his career high with four hits. Reynolds tied the score 3-3 with a drive to right-center in a four-run third inning, and Kevin Newman hit a go-ahead, two-run double. Roansy Contreras, a 22-year-old rookie right-hander, pitched three scoreless innings of one-hit relief to win his first big league decision.

Pirates Extend Reynolds’ Contract

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have signed outfielder Bryan Reynolds to a two year contract extension through the 2023 season. The 27 year old Reynolds was a 2021 finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award in center field and was named to the National League All Star team. Reynolds finished the 2021 season ranking third among National League outfielders with 67 extra base hits. The deal avoids arbitration and is worth $13.5 million

Pirates Split With Cubs

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Ben Gamel hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes went 4 for 4 a day after getting a big contract and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 for a two-game series split. Kevin Newman hit a two-run triple in the third for the Pirates, who went 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position, a day after going 0 for 10. Seiya Suzuki was 1 for 3 with an RBI single in the fourth. He is 6 for 20 (.400) with three homers and nine RBIs in six games.

Report; Raiders Give Carr 3-Year Extension

UNDATED (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Las Vegas Raiders have given quarterback Derek Carr a three-year contract extension worth $121.5 million.
The eight-year veteran was entering the final year of his deal, worth nearly $19.8 million in base salary. That contract was for five years at $125 million, the richest in the NFL at the time he signed it in 2017.  Carr helped them to the playoffs as a wild card in the tough AFC West. He threw for a career-high 4,804 yards and 23 touchdowns as Las Vegas went 10-7 before losing at Cincinnati in the postseason.

NHL; Rangers Back To Within 2 Points Of Carolina

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Kaapo Kakko scored a pair of goals and Alexandar Georgiev made 28 saves to lead the New York Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Artemi Panarin and Andrew Copp also scored for New York, which has won four of five. Barclay Goodrow and Jacob Trouba each had two assists. The Rangers remained in second place in the Metropolitan Division, two points behind idle Carolina. The Hurricanes skated to a 4-2 win over the Rangers in New York on Tuesday night. The Flyers have been outscored 18-5 while losing three in a row. Philadelphia entered 15th of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and was playing without several key regulars.

Penguins Fall To Islanders In A Shootout

NEW YORK (AP) –  Zach Parise and Josh Bailey each scored twice, and Kyle Palmieri had the lone goal in the shootout as the New York Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4. Ilya Sorokin stopped Jake Guentzel, Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang in the shootout and finished with a career-high 43 saves for New York. Jake Guentzel had two goals and an assist, Crosby had two assist and Casey DeSmith made 33 saves for the Penguins, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Danton Heinen and Jeff Carter also scored for Pittsburgh.
