Pirates Defeat Nationals 5-1, Bubba Chandler Shines

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pirates rookie right-hander Bubba Chandler turns 23 on Sunday. He started celebrating one day earlier. Chandler, making his second major league start, took a perfect game into the sixth inning to help the Pirates snap a seven-game losing streak with a 5-1 win against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. He allowed a run and two hits over six innings, striking out seven without a walk while throwing 81 pitches. Chandler allowed a leadoff single to Dylan Crews to start the sixth and Crews later scored on a single by Robert Hassell III to give Washington a 1-0 lead they held until the eighth. Edwards’ OT Run Wins Backyard Brawl

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Tye Edwards rushed for three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in overtime to lift West Virginia to a 31-24 win over Pittsburgh. West Virginia improves to 2-1 and bounced back from a pitiful performance a week ago at Ohio. Quarterback Nicco Marchiol was benched for five series in the second half before leading West Virginia on a furious comeback. The Mountaineers scored 10 points in the final five minutes of regulation to send it to overtime. Nittany Lions Cruise Past FCS Villanova, 52-6

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Drew Allar threw for 209 yards and a touchdown and No. 2 Penn State got another near flawless effort from its defense in a 52-6 win over Villanova. Nicholas Singleton ran for two touchdowns, Kaytron Allen added another, Trebor Peña caught a touchdown, and Ryan Barker kicked three field goals. Linebacker Tony Rojas had two sacks for the Nittany Lions (3-0) who came one play shy of posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1996. WASHINGTON (AP) — Dylan Crews hit a two-run homer, James Wood threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning and the Washington Nationals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Friday night. Josh Bell added a two-run double for the Nationals, who took a 6-3 lead with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Crews’ ninth homer. Wood allowed a ball hit by Nick Gonzales in the ninth to land over his head in left field for a ground-rule double. But when Joey Bart singled with runners on second and third and one out, Wood nailed Alexander Canario at the plate with a 93 mph throw to keep it at 6-5.

Marc-Andre Fleury To Suit Up For The Pittsburgh Penguins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Marc-Andre Fleury is ending his NHL career where it began. The veteran goaltender, who retired last spring after a 21-year career, has signed a professional tryout contract with the Penguins. He will suit up for Pittsburgh’s exhibition game against Columbus on September 27. The 40-year-old Fleury was taken No. 1 overall by the Penguins in the 2003 NHL draft. He spent 13 seasons in Pittsburgh, helping the team win three Stanley Cups. Fleury left after being selected by Vegas in the expansion draft in 2017. He holds nearly every major goaltending record in Penguins history.

Marc-Andre Fleury Returns To Pittsburgh For Special Appearance

PITTSBURGH — Marc-Andre Fleury will return to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a special appearance, signing a professional tryout contract to play parts of an exhibition game.  The Penguins announced Fleury’s return, highlighting his significance to the team and the city. Fleury, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh, will join the team for practice on Sept. 26 before suiting up for the exhibition game against Columbus on Sept. 27 at PPG Paints Arena.  “The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh,” said Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager of the Penguins.  Fleury, 40, is celebrated for his remarkable career in the NHL, having played 22 years with four teams: Pittsburgh, Vegas, Chicago, and Minnesota. His tenure includes 1,051 regular-season games with a record of 575 wins, 339 losses, and 97 ties, along with 76 shutouts.

Packers Improve To 2-0 With Win Over Commanders

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Jordan Love threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns and the Green Bay Packers beat the Washington Commanders 27-18. Tight end Tucker Kraft caught six passes for a career-high 124 yards to help the Packers improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2020. Love and Kraft connected on an 8-yard touchdown play with 8:57 left to thwart the Commanders’ comeback attempt. Love’s other touchdown pass was a 5-yarder to Romeo Doubs in the first quarter. Washington gained just 11 yards in the first quarter and lost running back Austin Ekeler to an Achilles tendon injury late in the game.

DK Metcalf Downplays Facing His Former Team

PITTSBURGH (AP) — DK Metcalf is set to face his former team, the Seattle Seahawks, as a Pittsburgh Steeler. He spent six years in Seattle and has since moved on, focusing on his future with the Steelers. Metcalf caught four passes for 83 yards in Pittsburgh’s season-opening win over the New York Jets. Seahawks defensive back Shaquill Griffin acknowledges the challenge but emphasizes the team’s focus on winning. Meanwhile, the Steelers have signed Jabrill Peppers to fill in for injured safety DeShon Elliott. Peppers, recently cut by New England, is eager to contribute to Pittsburgh’s defense.

Pirates Get Swept In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) — Rookie Dylan Beavers drove in the winning run for a second straight day, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Pirates 3-2 to finish a three-game sweep and hand Pittsburgh its sixth straight loss. Jackson Holliday singled and stole his 16th base to lead off the seventh against Colin Holderman (0-2). Gunnar Henderson was walked intentionally with one out and Holderman left after striking out Emmanuel Rivera. Evan Sisk entered and Beavers singled on a 3-2 pitch for a 3-2 lead. Beavers singled in the winning run in the 10th inning for a 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

NCAA Investigates Former Players For Sports Betting

The NCAA is investigating potential sports betting violations involving 13 former men’s basketball players from six schools. The schools themselves are not under investigation. The NCAA’s integrity program flagged unusual betting activities, including athletes betting on their own games and sharing information for betting purposes. The NCAA Committee on Infractions has resolved similar cases, permanently revoking the eligibility of three players from Fresno State and San Jose State for manipulating game outcomes. The NCAA will not name the athletes involved until the investigation concludes. NCAA President Charlie Baker emphasized the need for stricter regulations to address integrity risks.
