PIAA Imposes Forfeit on Meadville, Uniontown Following Fracas

March 10, 2025 2:13 am

A brawl erupted in the final quarter of Friday’s PIAA 5A Boys first round playoff game. Game officials stopped the contest with 3:12 remaining in the fourth quarter and host Meadville leading by eight points. While officials were discussing multiple fouls, both personal and technical, an altercation took place in the bleachers behind the Meadville bench. It then spilled out onto the basketball court and included several players. Monday, after receiving reports from both schools, the PIAA declared the game a double forfeit, publicly censured both schools and placed requirements on both districts affecting their eligibility for next year’s district and state basketball tournaments.

PIAA Statement, issued Monday, March 10:
“Due to the blatant violations of the PIAA Bylaws, the Meadville vs. Uniontown basketball game will be recorded as a forfeiture for each team.
*-PIAA publicly censured both schools for the actions in the March 7, 2025 PIAA First Round Inter-District Basketball contest held at Meadville HS against Uniontown Area HS.

*-Both schools are removed from the PIAA Inter-District Basketball Tournament and are suspended from participation for the remainder of the 2024-25 basketball tournament.

*-Both schools are also removed from the 2025-26 PIAA Basketball Inter-District Basketball Tournament unless the following provisions are adhered to:
1) A plan of action will be submitted to PIAA detailing what processes are in place to prevent situations like this from occurring in the future. School submitted action plans are due by Wednesday, March 19th, 2025.

2) All players for the 2025-26 school year will complete the NFHS Sportsmanship module

3) All coaches in the 2025-26 basketball program will complete the NFHS Sportsmanship and the Teaching and Modeling Behavior modules.

4) The identified spectators from each school whose identities are known to school administration are to be banned from attendance at any and all school sponsored activities until June 15, 2026.

5) Each school is reprimanded for not addressing the unsportsmanlike behavior of their spectators which is a direct violation of the PIAA Bylaws as detailed in Article 1, Section 5, Spectators of the PIAA Bylaws.

Justin Fields To Sign With Jets; Steelers Talk With Aaron Rodgers

March 11, 2025 4:40 am

The Steelers won’t have Justin Fields back at quarterback next season. Fields has reached a two-year, $40 million deal that includes $30 million guaranteed with the New York Jets, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. As of Monday morning, Schefter said that Russell Wilson has still been in talks with the Steelers. At the same time, reports say veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is under consideration to join the Steelers. “Rodgers and the Steelers are expected to talk and explore a union. The idea of Rodgers playing for Mike Tomlin is in play,” Schefter posted on X Monday morning. This all comes a day after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf. The NFL free agency officially begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Titans Sign Steelers Tackle Dan Moore; Ogunjobi Released

March 11, 2025 4:33 am

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are making their first big move in free agency trying to fix a porous offensive line by bringing in Pittsburgh left tackle Dan Moore. That’s what a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Monday. The Titans have agreed to a four-year deal worth $82 million with $50 million guaranteed. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announced the signing. The NFL Network first reported the deal. Contracts cannot be finalized until the new NFL year starts Wednesday afternoon. The Steelers also released veteran defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, a move that will free up about $7 million in salary cap space ahead of free agency. Ogunjobi spent three years in Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old finished with a career-low 41 tackles in 2024 and had just 1 1/2 sacks, tied for the fewest since his rookie year with Cleveland in 2017. Pittsburgh also tendered an offer to restricted free agent running back Jaylen Warren. Warren has rushed for more than 1,600 yards in his three seasons in Pittsburgh.

The sources spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was not official. Metcalf will receive a new five-year, $150 million contract in Pittsburgh. His exodus from Seattle comes during a tumultuous stretch for the Seahawks, which dealt quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders last week.
