Late Wreck Gives McDowell Daytona Victory

February 15, 2021 4:00 am

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Michael McDowell couldn’t have picked a better time, place or venue in which to get his first victory in 358 career Cup Series starts.  McDowell pulled ahead and won the Daytona 500 after Penske Racing teammates Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski wrecked on the final lap.  McDowell was running third when Keselowski got a huge run on Logano. Keselowski tried to pass Logano on the low side, but Logano tried to block him and ended up crashing both of them. That gave McDowell the lead for the only time in the season-opening NASCAR race.  Chase Elliott was second, followed by Austin Dillon, Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin.  Hamlin was trying to become the first in NASCAR history to win three consecutive Daytona 500s.  A major pileup and a thunderstorm put the race on hold for nearly six hours and led some drivers to head across the street for some food while the event remained red-flagged with just 15 laps completed.  The big wreck occurred 14 laps into NASCAR’s marquee event, triggered when Aric Almirola turned into pole-winner Alex Bowman and started a 16-car pileup. Christopher Bell started the melee when he pushed Almirola too hard near the front of the field and forced the Stewart-Haas Racing driver to bobble as he tried to avoid a slide.

After a quick timeout to set up a final play, Penn State turned it over again, this time with Trey McGowens making the steal for Nebraska as time expired. The Huskers had not won in conference since edging Iowa 76-70 on Jan. 7, 2020. Allen led Nebraska with 14 points. McGowens added 10 with four assists a block and three steals. Myreon Jones led Penn State with 18 points, Myles Dread added 14, tying his season best.

Berger Rallies To Win Pebble Beach Pro-Am

February 15, 2021 4:01 am

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) – Jordan Spieth (speeth) was unable to complete a quest for his first tour victory since the 2017 British Open.  Daniel Berger closed with a 7-under 65 that gave him a two-shot win at the PGA’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Berger got into the mix quickly with an eagle and finished it off with one even better, holing a 30-foot putt on the par-5 18th for an 18-under total.  Spieth went from a two-shot lead to a three-stroke deficit through six holes before completing a 70. He needed to birdie the last two holes to tie for third with Patrick Cantlay, who shot a 68.  Maverick McNealy finished second with his fourth straight round under 70, firing a 6-under 66.

Spieth In Lead At Pebble Beach

February 14, 2021 7:34 am

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — One swing put Jordan Spieth closer than ever to ending a long and mystifying slump, and served as a reminder that he still has a long road ahead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Two shots behind with three holes to play Saturday, Spieth holed out with an 8-iron from 160 yards for eagle on the 16th hole, the start of a stunning turnaround that sent him to a 1-under 71 and a two-shot lead going into the final round. Daniel Berger helped out by going from a share of the lead to two shots behind when his tee shot on the par-5 18th was out-of-bounds by mere inches and led to a double bogey. The timing was ideal for Spieth, who has been without a victory worldwide in his last 79 events since he won the 2017 British Open at Royal Birkdale. He led by two shots at the turn only to miss the green and make bogey at the 10th and 12th, and then bail out of a tough wedge to a back pin on the par-5 14th that spun off the green for another bogey. The pin on the 16th was cut to the left on a severely pitched green, and it was perfect. These moments used to happen when Spieth was winning all the time. This was the second time this week he holed out from the fairway, and now he is on the cusp of winning again. Spieth was at 13-under 203 with plenty of contenders right behind.

Steelers’ Pouncey Announces Retirement

February 13, 2021 3:47 am

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey has announced his retirement. He was 2010’s 18th overall pick out of the University of Florida. He made the announcement in a statement that also announced that his twin brother Mike is also retiring. Unfortunately, injuries were a major part of his Steelers story. In 2011, near the end of his rookie season, Pouncey injured his ankle in the AFC Championship Game and missed playing in Super Bowl XV. In 2013, he was hurt on the first offensive drive of the first regular-season game, and ended up missing the remainder of the season. Two years later, he was injured in the preseason and missed the entire regular season. When he did play, however, Pouncey set the standard for both the Steelers and the NFL. He held down the Steelers line for more than a decade, starting all 134 games he played. Pouncey also started eight playoff games.
