Canon-McMillan broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fifth, then added three more in the sixth on the way to a berth in the 6A softball semifinals. Trinity allowed five runs in the first two innings and never recovered, losing to Plum in the 5A softball opening round. On the baseball diamonds, Charleroi held off a late Mt. Pleasant rally to advance while Waynesburg fell behind early in a shutout loss to Avonworth.
California eliminated defending WPIAL champion Freedom, earning a third matchup with #1 seed Fort Cherry. Avella, Burgettstown and Ringgold lost their first-round baseball games are have been eliminated. Both Greene County teams in action Monday advanced to the quarterfinals.
Baseball and softball action takes a day off Wednesday before 1A-2A-3A softball opening round action on Thursday.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes is making flirting with no-hitters a regular thing. Skenes took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of a 3-1 win over Colorado. It marked the third time in his last four starts that Skenes has reached the fifth inning without giving up a hit. The Rockies didn’t break through until Mickey Moniak’s one-out single in the seventh. Skenes finished by tossing eight innings of two-hit ball, with a season-high 10 strikeouts and no walks. The 23-year-old is now 6-2 on the season with a 1.98 ERA.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed catcher Joey Bart on the 10-day injured list due to a left foot infection. Bart was hitting .259 with two homers and nine RBIs while sharing catching duties with Henry Davis at the time of the injury. The Pirates called up catcher/designated hitter Endy Rodriguez from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Bart. Rodriguez was hitting .221 with one home run and 16 RBIs at the time of his call-up. Pittsburgh also called up reliever Brandan Bidois from Triple-A and optioned reliever Cam Sanders back to the minors.

(AP) – Sidney Crosby is heading to Switzerland to represent his native Canada at the men’s world hockey championships. This will mark the Pittsburgh Penguins captain’s fourth career appearance at the international tournament, and second in consecutive years. Crosby was available after the Penguins were eliminated by Philadelphia in Game 6 of the first round of the NHL playoffs two weeks ago. The 38-year-old Crosby’s addition came at the same time Hockey Canada announced New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal will not compete as a precaution because of an injury.

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers are extending the contract for the team’s veteran kicker. Per insider Adam Schefter, the Steelers have agreed to terms with Chris Boswell on a four-year, $28 million extension with an average annual salary of $7 million. This contract ties Boswell with the Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey for the highest-paid kicker in NFL History. Boswell has been the Steelers’ kicker for the last 11 seasons and has a career field goal percentage of 87.7%. He’s now locked in with the team through 2030.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Ross Colton and Parker Kelly each scored their first goals of the postseason in the third period for Colorado as the Avalanche snapped back from a midseries lull and beat the Minnesota Wild 5-2 in Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead in the second round of the NHL playoffs. Mackenzie Blackwood made 19 saves in his first start this postseason after relieving Scott Wedgewood during the 5-1 loss in Game 3. The Avalanche moved within one win of the Western Conference finals. Danila Yurov and Nico Sturm scored for the Wild.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Donovan Mitchell had his worst first half in a playoff game since joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in September 2022. No problem. The All-Star guard followed it up with one of the best 24-minute stretches by a player in NBA playoff history Monday night. After scoring only four points in the first half, Mitchell responded with 39 in the second half, tying the NBA playoff record for most points in a half as the Cavaliers rallied for a 112-103 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James says he has no idea whether his 24-point performance in the Los Angeles Lakers’ second-round playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder was the final game of his NBA career. The top scorer in league history stuck to the plan he has taken into the past several summers when he declined to announce his future immediately after the Lakers’ final postseason defeat. He hasn’t ruled out retirement or a return to the Lakers, and he didn’t speculate about moving to another team as he contemplates the possibility of an unprecedented 24th NBA season.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jesús Rodríguez hit an RBI single in the 12th inning and the San Francisco Giants rallied from a pair of two-run deficits to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6. The Giants loaded the bases against Justin Lawrence when Matt Chapman hit a double that only advanced automatic runner Heliot Ramos to third, and Drew Gilbert was intentionally walked. Rodríguez followed with a single to right to give the struggling Giants just their third win in the last 12 games. Oneil Cruz and Konnor Griffin homered for the Pirates.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan shot 2-under 69 on Sunday to earn a two-shot win over Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard at the Truist Championship for his first victory on the PGA Tour. Reitan, who chose golf over soccer at a young age, won twice previously on the European Tour. He finished at 15-under 269. He called the feeling of winning his first PGA Tour event “unreal.” Alex Fitzpatrick, the third-round leader, finished three shots back after shooting 73.
