Brewers Win 12th Straight With Sweep Of Pirates

MILWAUKEE (AP) — William Contreras drove in four runs, Christian Yelich drove in three and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-5 to extend their winning streak to 12 games. Milwaukee scored double-digit runs for the second straight game and the fourth time this month. The Brewers belted out 12 hits but only two — back-to-back fourth-inning doubles by Sal Frelick and Isaac Collins — were for extra bases. Frelick and Joey Ortiz each drove in two runs and Collins had one RBI. The Brewers start an eight-game road trip with the first of three against the Reds in Cincinnati on Friday. The Pirates have lost five in a row.

Browns Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders Suffers Injury

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cleveland rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders sustained an oblique injury during practice Wednesday and is unlikely to play in the Browns’ preseason game against the Eagles. Sanders did not finish the practice session and was ruled out of Thursday’s practice. The Browns said Sanders is day to day. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards with two first-half touchdown passes in his NFL preseason debut against Carolina on Friday night. The Browns took Sanders in the fifth round of the NFL draft. He is part of a crowded Browns quarterback room, with Deshaun Watson expected to sit out this season.

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has credited an experimental trial drug for successfully treating advanced melanoma as he disclosed his cancer diagnosis publicly for the first time. Jones revealed his illness in a documentary debuting on Netflix next week. The 82-year-old Jones told The Dallas Morning News how he was initially diagnosed in June 2010 and underwent two surgeries on his lung and two on his lymph nodes over the next 10 years after skin cancer cells metastasized. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer described Jones’ fight with cancer as an “amazing story” and praised him for going public. He also revealed his own fight with thyroid cancer when he was 28.

Washington County to World Series Title Game

It’s been a long time since a Washington County team won a PONY League World Series title. Monongahela (1954) and Washington (1955) went back-to-back in the early days of the tournament.  For just the third time in the 70 years since Reggie Bolden led the locals to the top of the PONY mountain, Washington County has a winner-take-all opportunity Wednesday night. The Host team is the last undefeated team in the field and will take on Chinese Taipei, winners of five straight elimination games. Pregame ceremonies at Historic Lew Hays PONY Field begin at 6:30 pm with team introductions shortly after 7:00 pm. Lucas Daniels homered for the second straight game and Clint Havanis was masterful on the mound as Washington County clinched a berth in Wednesday’s championship game, besting the South Zone entry in run-rule style. Kaden Harkins doubled home a run in the first and Niko Vitale scored on a error to give the Hosts a 2-0 lead. one inning later, with Andrew Irwin aboard, Daniels blasted a towering shot to left-center, igniting the crowd. Carson Simmers drove in another run later in the second and the blowout was on. Havanis allowed just a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, facing just two batters beyond the minimum, striking out seven. Washington County added single runs in the third and fourth then sealed the deal with a four-spot in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate. Vitale tripled home one run, Harkins singled in another and Ashton Fike’s pinch-hit double set the final score. With the win, the hosts await the Chinese Taipei / Simi Valley winner in the title game.

Game 15:  Division Final Chinese Taipei 5, Simi Valley, CA 3 Chinese Taipei won a fourth straight game facing elimination and forced an If Necessary contest by handing the West Zone champions their first loss of the World Series. Chieh-Yu Sung singled home a pair of runs in the first, Zi-Han Yang delivered an RBI groundout i the third and a Tang-You Zhang squeezed home the final run in the fifth, extending CT’s consecutive run mark to 44.  Simi Valley scored three times in the sixth, and brought the potential tying run to the plate in each of the final two innings. Riely Loggins doubled and went to third when Sawyer Jackson struck out but reached on a throwing error. Shane Smith’s ground out scored Loggins before JJ Vargas walked. Ean Devine doubled to drive in a pair, pulling Simi Valley within 5-3.  Ting-Han Hung got the win, tossing 3.2 shut out innings, allowing four hits. Shih-Min Chung worked the final 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run to pick up the save.

Game 14:  Corpus Christi 9, Bay County 4 A six-run second put the South Zone team in control and JJ de los Santos cruised to a complete-game victory to stay alive in the tournament. Bay County got back in the game with two runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth but didn’t have another base runner. Five different batters drove in runs for the Texans who took advantage of four errors as well. Corpus Christi banged out 13 hits to earn a rematch with Washington County in the Division Final.

Game 13:  Chinese Taipei 13, Monterrey, Mexico 0 The Asia-Pacific champions extended their consecutive runs mark to 39 with the five-inning win, eliminating Monterrey. Home runs by Ting -Han Hung, En Chen and Yi-Le Li paced the 15-hit attack. Chieh-Yu Sung drove in three runs to help Hung to the win. CT sent 12 batters to the plate in the final inning, scoring six runs and invoking PONY’s run rule. Monterrey managed just two hits in the loss.

Pirates Place Outfielder Oneil Cruz On Seven-Day Concussion Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates today placed outfielder Oneil Cruz on the seven-day concussion injured list. Outfielder Ronny Simon has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.  The 25-year-old Simon, who was claimed off waivers from Miami on June 2, hit .291 (60-for-206) with nine doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 30 RBI, 32 walks, 24 stolen bases and 35 runs scored in 52 games with Indianapolis prior to being promoted today. During his time with the Indians, he made 34 appearances (33 starts) in left field, 11 appearances (all starts) as the designated hitter and seven appearances (all starts) in right field.

Brewers Beat Skenes To Win 11th Straight

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Sal Frelick and Brice Turang homered off Paul Skenes, and the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-0 for their 11th consecutive victory. Christian Yelich, Andrew Vaughn and Caleb Durbin also went deep as major league-leading Milwaukee improved to 27-5 in its last 32 games. Freddy Peralta pitched six innings of three-hit ball in his second straight win. The Brewers’ 11-game winning streak is their second of the season and the second-longest in franchise history. Skenes permitted four runs and six hits in four innings.

PONY World Series Monday

Washington County and Simi Valley are in control of divisional play at the 73rd PONY League World Series after Monday night victories in the winners’ brackets. Six teams remain in the field, with a pair of elimination games opening Tuesday’s schedule, setting the tournament’s final four.  The Division Finals are Tuesday night, If Necessary games during the day Wednesday and the championship game is planned for Wednesday night. Monday, Aug. 11 — Bracket
Chinese Taipei 21, Colombia 0 (4 inn.) (Colombia eliminated) Two batters in, Chinese had all it needed to eliminate Colombia and rolled on to the third widest margin of victory in World Series history. The Asia-Pacific champions scored five runs in that first inning, four more in the third before exploding for 12 runs in their final frame. Four player drove in three runs as CT stayed alive in the elimination bracket. Colombia had just one hit and was held to the minimum 12 batters in the run-rule loss.

Bay County 6, South Hills 5 (South Hills eliminated) Brody Kuhn tossed 6/1 innings of relief and Jack Melick drove in a pair of runs, including the game-winner as the North Zone champions stayed alive in the tournament. BayCo took a 2-0 first-inning lead with a single, a walk and four wild pitches. Drew Opferman put South Hills in front in the bottom of the frame with a towering three-run home run. Melick’s first RBI, a solo homer in the second tied the game in the second. Opferman stroked a solo shot of hit own to give the Host Area champs their last lead of the day. The winners tied the game in the fourth with an unearned run, then added another unearned marker in the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Brodie Curry singled with two out, then scored on Brody Cole’s double. Melick’s two-out single in the top of the seventh scored Mason Krager with the winning run. Kuhn allowed two runs and four hits while striking out four to get the win.

Simi Valley, CA 4, Monterrey 1 Kade Monica singled in a pair of runs in the second and Riely Loggins held the Mexico champions to just four hits as the West Zone champions advanced to the Division Finals. Nate Griswold and Wyatt Ruiz singled and Ean Devine walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Monica’s base hit. Devine then scored on a dropped tag at the plate. Monterrey got on the board with with Abdiel Zavala scoring on the back end of a double steal. RJ Terp singled with one out in the fifth, scoring Trenton Nelson, setting the final score. Loggins left the mound one out shy of a complete game having reached PONY’s daily pitch limit. He allowed just one run, four hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Washington County 10, Corpus Christi 5 The Hosts used a six-run fourth inning, keyed by Braxten Thompson’s pinch-hit grand slam, to drop Corpus Christi into the elimination bracket. The teams traded the lead early on. Carson Simmers put Washington County in front with a double, a fly out and an infield error in the first. Corpus used a hit-batter, singles by Josh Garcia and JJ de los Santos and a wild pitch to go up, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning. Lucas Daniels stoked a two-run home run to left, putting the locals in front, 3-2. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed another run to score. In the decisive fourth, six straight Washington County batters reached base, all eventually scoring. Simmers singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Niko Vitale’s base hit. Kaden Harkins doubled to score Vitale. Ryan Lukas walked and Ethan Amos singled to load the bases. Thompson came off the bench and blasted the second grand slam in this year’s tournament, and the second all-time for the local program, the first since 1997 (Patrick Sadler). Corpus Christi chipped away, scoring twice in the fourth and again in the fifth, but stranded five runners over the final three innings. Lucas got the win, with Vitale and Keegan Widenhofer combining to hold the Texans to one run over the final three innings. Simmers had three hits for the winners. Andrew Irwin added a pair.

Brewers Beat Pirates For 10th Straight Win

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brice Turang hits his first career leadoff home run helping the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 on Monday night. Jose Quintana allows just three hits over six innings, striking out three and walking one. The Brewers extend their winning streak to 10 games, improving to 25-4 over the last 29 games. Christian Yelich adds a solo home run in the third inning. Grant Anderson and Shelby Miller keep the Pirates hitless in the final three innings. Pirates starter Andrew Heaney gives up six runs on nine hits in four innings.
