Penguins Win Third Straight

October 22, 2025 4:29 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang both reached milestones in Pittsburgh’s 5-1 win over Vancouver. Crosby scored his fourth goal of the season to move past Mario Lemieux and into seventh place alone for most points in NHL history in regular season and playoff games combined. Crosby now has 1,896 career points, one more than Lemieux. Kris Letang became the 20th defenseman to reach 600 career assists. The 20-year-veteran set up Tommy Novak’s goal in the second period to get to 599 assists. Letang reached 600 assists in the third period on Justin Brazeau’s fifth goal of the year. The Penguins have won three straight.

Steelers Killebrew To Have Season-Ending Knee Surgery

October 22, 2025 4:30 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers special teams captain Miles Killebrew will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Killebrew, a two-time Pro Bowler and 2023 All-Pro, injured his knee earlier this month on what his teammates described as an unsafe turf at Acrisure Stadium. Veteran safety Jabrill Peppers filled in for Killebrew as the personal protector on punts, but Tomlin isn’t ready to make it permanent. Outside of Killebrew, the Steelers are relatively healthy as they prepare for a Sunday night game against Green Bay. Wide receiver Calvin Austin III could return after missing two games with a shoulder injury.

Dodgers To Start Snell & Yamamoto In Toronto

October 22, 2025 4:33 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Snell will start Game 1 of the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will pitch in Game 2, according to manager Dave Roberts. This pitching order repeats the strategy used in the NL Championship Series, which the Dodgers swept in four games against the Milwaukee Brewers. Snell had an impressive performance in Game 1 last week, striking out 10 over eight scoreless innings. He became the first Dodger pitcher to complete eight innings while allowing one hit or fewer in a postseason game. Yamamoto threw the first complete game by a Dodgers pitcher in the postseason since 2004.

Springer’s Home Run Sends Blue Jays To World Series

October 21, 2025 4:26 am

TORONTO (AP) — George Springer put Toronto ahead with a three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Blue Jays advanced to the World Series for the first time since 1993 by beating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays will host Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 on Friday night when the World Series comes to Canada for the third time. The defending champion Dodgers swept Milwaukee in the NLCS. Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez each hit a solo home run for Seattle in the team’s first postseason Game 7, but the Mariners squandered a 3-1 lead in the seventh and remain the only major league team without a pennant.

Seahawks Knock Off Texans

October 21, 2025 4:30 am

SEATTLE (AP) — Jaxon Smith-Njigba had his NFL-leading fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Houston Texans 27-19. Smith-Njigba, who entered the game leading the league in yards receiving, gave Seattle a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter when he caught an 11-yard TD pass from Sam Darnold. Smith-Njigba celebrated his fourth touchdown catch of the season by dunking on the crossbar of the goalposts, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the process. In total, Smith-Njigba caught eight passes for 123 receiving yards. He became the second player in franchise history to record three straight 100-yard games, and his five 100-yard games this season are tied for the second-most in a year by any Seahawks player.

Gibbs Leads Lions Over Tampa Bay

October 21, 2025 4:32 am

DETROIT (AP) — Jahmyr Gibbs scored on a 78-yard sprint in the second quarter, a 5-yard spinning plunge in the third and accounted for a career-high 218 yards from scrimmage to lead the Detroit Lions in a 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. The Lions bounced back from a loss as they have done flawlessly for nearly three years. Tampa Bay was outgained by more than 200 yards in the first half, but trailed 14-3 because Detroit had an interception, fumble, turned it over on downs and missed a field goal.

WPIAL Football Playoff Picture–Last Chance

October 19, 2025 12:02 am

The WPIAL football regular season ends Saturday. Late in the afternoon, the WPIAL Football Playoff brackets will be released, six tournaments including a total of 65 teams. Most of those will have claimed automatic bids by finishing section play in a qualifying position. 16 others will have received Wild Card invitations. Following is look at the playoff picture for the 19 teams in Washington & Greene Counties, each with one game left (conference record).

The Class 6A field will include the top four teams. Canon-McMillan (2-3) is just a couple plays away from being in SECOND place. The Big Macs are also teetering on not qualifying. Canon-Mac needs to either beat Central Catholic (5-0), the conference champion, or see Norwin (3-2) knock off resurgent Mt. Lebanon (2-3). The Big Macs are in with either of the scenarios but out otherwise.

5A Peters Township: The Indians (4-0) has clinched at least a share of the Allegheny Six championship heading into Friday’s final game at Bethel Park (2-2). A win should lock up at least the #2 seed in the tournament and a first-round bye. The top three teams in each conference qualify along with three wild card selections, making up a 12-team bracket.

4A Trinity (4-0) has locked up the Big Six Conference top spot but needs a win at Belle Vernon (2-2) to keep from sharing the title and going into the 4A bracket with just a .500 record. The Hillers have rattled off four straight wins after one of the most-difficult non-conference schedules in Class 4A—including 5A Peters Township, Moon and Bethel, plus Montour. The top two teams in each conference qualify for the 8-team bracket, supplemented by two wild cards teams.  Ringgold’s back-to-back losses the past two weeks have knocked the Rams out of playoff contention.

3A McGuffey: The Highlanders (0-5) cannot qualify for the 12-team bracket made up of the top three conference finishers and three wild card choices.

2A Wash High, Waynesburg, Charleroi: The Little Prexies (5-0) locked up their playoff spot in the 13-team bracket, comprised of the top three finishers in each conference plus four wild card teams. Wash High heads to Dormont Friday to take on Seton-La Salle (5-0) with the winner taking the Century Conference championship and, likely, the #2 seed in the bracket. Waynesburg (2-3) closes with Sto-Rox (1-4), needing to win to finish at .500 and get into the wild card discussion. Charleroi, at 1-8 overall, cannot qualify.

The Class 1A playoff field will include 16 teams, the top three finishers in each of the four conferences, then four wild card selections. The Black Hills Conference will almost certainly get one wild card slot and possibly two. The Tri-County South did not fare well a year ago in the at-large selection process, though a 7-win fourth-place team should be in good shape for an at-large selection this season.

Black Hills Conference: Fort Cherry (5-0) has clinched their third straight conference title. The two-time defending WPIAL champion hosts Serra Catholic (1-4) to close the regular season. Chartiers-Houston (4-2) clinched an automatic berth with a walk-off win at Cornell last week. Bugettstown (0-5) cannot qualify.

Tri-County South: California (6-0), Bentworth (5-1) and Jeff-Morgan (5-1) have clinched the three automatic berths.  has clinched one of the three automatic bids. The Trojans win the conference title with a win at Jeff-Morgan Friday. Bentworth is the top team with a win against Avella and a Jeff-Morgan win. Avella (3-3) is in the wild card discussion, but the Tri-County South didn’t fare well in those conversations a year ago. Carmichaels (2-4) and Beth-Center (2-4) technically, could be in consideration as well, but sub-.500 overall records will likely keep the Mikes and Bulldogs on the playoff sideline. West Greene (1-5) and Mapletown (0-6) cannot qualify.
