UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — The Caitlin Clark era in the WNBA has officially begun, although it got off to a slow start. Clark went scoreless for nearly the first 15 minutes, before getting more comfortable and finishing with 20 points in the Indiana Fever’s 92-71 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night. She missed her first four shots before finally getting on the board midway through the second period. The NCAA’s all-time Division I scoring leader stole the ball around the foul line and drove the length of the court before laying the ball in. Clark had said before the game that she thought her first basket would come on a layup since it was a “high-percentage” shot.

There will be a new WPIAL 5A softball champion. Latrobe made sure of that, knocking off defending champion Trinity, 5-1, Monday afternoon. The Hillers were held to just three hits, all singles. Maddie Balko stroked a two-run home run in the fourth and the Wildcats never trailed. First round tournament play continues on Tuesday with 17 teams from Washington & Greene Counties in action. Our coverage plans for the opening rounds have been severely limited because the WPIAL scheduled the 1A-2A-3A baseball and softball games all on the same day (Tuesday). The WJPA Sports Network will have live coverage of as many games as possible. WPIAL Softball Bracket Link WPIAL Baseball Bracket Link

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a go-ahead single before Patrick Wisdom added insurance with a home run in the 10th inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates for a series victory. Bellinger led off that inning Sunday by dribbling a ball through the left side of the infield off Aroldis Chapman, scoring automatic runner Seiya Suzuki before getting caught in a rundown between first and second. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes struck out seven over four-plus innings in his major league debut and Yasmani Grandal hit a go-ahead three-run homer as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago Cubs 10-9. Skenes, the top overall pick in the 2023 draft, showed flashes of why he is considered perhaps the best pitching prospect in a generation. The 21-year-old reached 100 mph on 17 of his 84 pitches. Pittsburgh hit five home runs in all. Miles Mastrobuoni had three hits for the Cubs. (Photo: AP)
