Top-seeded Canon-McMillan showed the effects of a nine-day layoff but the Big Macs girls handled Mt. Lebanon to reach the 6A semifinals. CM held the Blue Devils off the scoreboard for the entire second quarter, eventually stretching the shutout streak to more than 12 minutes. West Greene girls lost at Union and drop into an elimination consolation game on Monday. The Jeff-Morgan boys hopes of a WPIAL title ended. The Rockets fell behind OLSH by double digits early and couldn’t climb out of the hole. J-M has a PIAA berth in hand and will now play through the consolation bracket. The quarterfinals finish Friday. Through the tournament, our audio coverage is available free on-air and online. Video coverage for WPIAL/PIAA playoff games is accessible through the NFHS Network. MILAN (AP) — Sidney Crosby has not been ruled out for Canada’s semifinal game against Finland at the Olympics on Friday after leaving the quarterfinals with an apparent right-leg injury. He did not take part in an optional practice Thursday. Coach Jon Cooper said Crosby was seeing the best doctors as the determination was being made for whether the 38-year-old captain would be able to play. Crosby’s right knee buckled when he was bracing for a hit from Czechia’s Radko Gudas five minutes into the second period of the teams’ game Wednesday night. Sam Bennett figures to return to the lineup if Crosby does not play.

The U.S. women’s hockey team has earned its third gold medal in Olympic history. Team USA defeated the Canadian team 2-1 in a nail-biting game Thursday in Milan. Canada’s Kristin O’Neill sank the game’s first goal during the second period. With just over two minutes left in the third period, Team USA captain and four-time Olympian Hilary Knight scored to bring the game into overtime. This was the third time in the last four Olympics that the U.S. and Canada women’s hockey teams needed extra minutes to decide the gold-medal champion. With her goal, Knight broke the Team USA Olympic record for goals, bringing it to 15. A 36-year-old California native, Knight previously announced that this year’s Olympic Games would be her last. Less than a minute into overtime, Megan Keller scored to bring Team USA the win. Earlier on Thursday, Switzerland bested Sweden 2-1 in overtime to take bronze.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rory McIlroy got a little bit of everything in the Genesis Invitational and shares the clubhouse lead with Jacob Bridgeman after a 66. Aaron Rai is one shot ahead but has two holes left to play because of a three-hour rain delay. The surprise is Scottie Scheffler. He’s at 5-over par and tied for last place in the 72-man field. Scheffler still has eight holes to play. The first round was stopped by darkness. The rain was followed by a cold, hard wind. The greens were soft but still fast, causing problems for everyone.

The Lions survived Trinity’s upset bid, outscoring the Hillers, 9-6, over the final 3:30 of the game. MILAN (AP) — Sidney Crosby left Canada’s Olympic quarterfinal game against Czechia in the second period because of injury, did not return and his status for the rest of the tournament is uncertain. Crosby’s right leg appeared to buckle when bracing for contact on a big hit from Czechia defenseman Radko Gudas a few minutes into the second. Laboring as he stayed on the ice, Crosby got crunched into the boards by Gudas and Martin Necas and then left after shaking his right leg and wincing. Crosby spoke to players at the second intermission, and Canada rallied to tie it and win in overtime.

MILAN (AP) — The U.S. and Canada are moving on to the semifinals at the Olympics. Each needed extra hockey to get through the quarterfinals. Quinn Hughes scored in overtime to put the U.S. past Sweden 2-1 after giving up the tying goal to Mika Zibanejad with 91 seconds left in the third period. Dylan Larkin deflected Jack Hughes’ shot in for the only U.S. goal in regulation. Nick Suzuki tied it for Canada late in regulation against Czechia, and Mitch Marner won it 4-3 in overtime to avoid what would have been a stunning early exit.
